San Salvador, February 24, 2012
In order to promote a culture of peace in the world, El Salvador has been chosen to host the first global acara "Messengers of Peace", which has been created by the World Scout Association to provide tools to young people in social risk situations, to create better environments free of violence.
The initiative of this program comes from the kings of Sweden and Saudi Arabia, who are giving a peace "gift" to all countries with activities that involves young people, who are the most affected by the social violence that affects many in our society.
In El Salvador, the Scout Association (SAES) will assume the challenge of promoting the acara that will involve 80 young people, including volunteers and youth in Scouts.
The volunteers involved in the project have between 15 and 18 years, and Scouts are between 18 and 26 years old, the scouts have assumed the role of mentors with a high commitment and spirit of service. Both youth groups meet twice a week for being able to achieve the objective of the program: to promote a culture of peace in the world.
The program will last five months, from February to June of 2012, and during this period both the young volunteers and the Scouts will be involved in a first experimental stage in which they will be together sharing their time, experiences, and above all, they will have the basic pembinaan for their development as "actors" of Peace, which promote values such as entrepreneurship, positive leadership, teamwork and the creation of community projects that benefits their social environment.
According to the Executive Director of the Salvadoran Institute for Children and Adolescents, Mr. Luis Salazar, "The strategic Alliance between the Scouts Association of El Salvador, seeks to use the Scout method based on the recovery of life projects, both young people that have problems with the law (social integration), as children and adolescents who have suffered various forms of violation of their rights (restoration of rights) in their country”.
In a second stage of the project "Messengers of Peace" the Young beneficiaries of SICA will be trained to create five community projects, which include workshops in planning, budget, resource management, and others.
These community projects will be developed in their place of residence, so in that way their families and the rest of their community will also be benefitted.
It is intended that the funds for the development of these community projects will be provided by private enterprises, who are investing in prevention programs and developing new opportunities for youth in risk.
For Mark Knippenger, Deputy Director of the World Scout Foundation, the Project will not only show what the Scouts daily do for other people and for nature, but it will also be a challenge to provide better service to their own community.
The project of Messengers of Peace in El Salvador has been possible thanks to the joint work of different people of Salvadoran society, including SICA, Scouting, Courts of Justice, volunteers, beneficiaries and their families as well as international organizations that bet on this as a project for it's country.
Currently it is being funded by the World Scout Foundation, but it is intended that the private sector will continue with this Project which aims to be a vehicle for preventing youth violence and hopes to be replicated in other countries.
To launch the program, El Salvador was visited by distinguished international personalities of World Scouting, including the adviser of the Prince of Saudi Arabia, Saaed Al Dosary, Mr. Abdullah Alfahad, World Scout Committee member and Deputy Director of the World Scout Foundation, Mark Knippenger.
With this project, the World Scout Movement aims that in the next ten years, at least two thirds of the 30 million of Scouts around the world will become "Messengers of Peace", in order to transform our world into a better place and send a message of peace to at least 20 million people.
