Uganda Scouts Take a Week of Voluntary Activities

The Uganda Scout Association celebrated the tenth anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers [IYV+10] by camping for a week at the Uganda National Scouts Camp, Kaazi. The scouts numbering about tiga, 900 camped from the 12th to the 17th of August and conducted volunteer activities under the theme “Skills for life a path towards active citizenship”.

Richard Okello, the Executive Secretary, had this to say when asked about the camp, “The camp aims to equip the scouts and their leaders, with life skills to make them better citizens to serve the community. The scouts are showcasing their skills as they provide voluntary services to the communities”

The Uganda scouts volunteers were trained on various trades. “This is part of the strategy to equip scouts with life skills", observed Okello. The scouts were trained on nature cons

ervation at the Wildlife Education Centre, scouting skills-pioneering, challenge valley activities, camping techniques, hiking and games, water paling aman rules, regulations and swimming, fire fighting and paling aman; child rights and youth participation, HIV/AIDS, voluntarism and humanitarian spirit.
